Bakery Mexico got 4.5 stars on Yelp and it was on my list of “Restaurants to Try.” Yelpers raved out the tortas being the best in the bay, so I finally decided to stop by since the place was only about three blocks away.
I’ve never actually tried a torta before so I didn’t really have any standard for it. I didn’t even know how one looked like before looking at the photos on the yelp page.
The place was quite small. They had a lot of baked goods displayed in the counter but I was there just to try the torta. The price came out to be $5.75 for one, which was decent for a restaurant in downtown.
It pretty much looked like a very large and flat burger. As I was unwrapping the foil, it smelled incredibly delicious. But I had to resist and snap a few photos first!
I took a bite expecting it to taste like a normal burger, but I could really feel the “mexican” vibe from it! So I had to take it apart a bit to see what exactly it was that made it taste great.
It was the pickled jalepenos that really sold it for me. I first took them out thinking it would be too spicy, but it was actually the perfect spiciness. It was still quite hot, but the flavor of it was just great! It really completed the torta. I can see why people loved their tortas. The onions were nice and sweet, and there was a generous amount of meat inside as well. The cheese was also interesting. I didn’t know what type it was, but it was slightly crumby. I was very happy with it. It wasn’t exactly jaw-dropping delicious, but it was just a great tasting burger/sandwich/torta.
